AI programming tools are getting stronger and stronger, but many developers have a common worry:Codex was performing a task on the computer, but the person had already left the workstation. Whether it's a meeting, a business trip, or home from work, whenever Codex encounters an operation that requires confirmation, the entire task stops until you are back in front of the computer.
Recently I discovered a very interesting open source project on GitHub--Codex iLink。Its goal is simple:Let you continue to use Codex on your Windows computer directly on WeChat. In this way, you can continue to collaborate with the AI, check execution progress, reply to messages, and even receive files generated by the AI even if you are not at your computer.
Not remote control, but sharing the same Codex
When many people see this project, their first reaction may be "remote desktop" or "chat history synchronization." In fact, Codex Link takes a more clever approach. Instead of creating a new set of chats, it connects directly to Original thread_id for Codex DesktopIn other words, whether you send messages on a computer or WeChat, you are operating the same session and seeing the same historical record. The AI always has a complete context and will not "lose memory" due to switching devices.
In addition to sending text, it also supports pictures, files and video messages. Markdown, PDFs, code files and other content generated by Codex can also be sent directly to WeChat, making the mobile phone truly a remote interactive portal for Codex.
AI continues to work on the computer, and you are only responsible for making key decisions
The greatest value of Codex Link is not to let mobile phones replace computers, but to let computers continue to become AI workstations. Even if the screen is locked, the display is turned off, or the person has left the office, as long as the computer remains turned on and connected, Codex will continue to perform tasks without having to wait in front of the screen all the time waiting for results.
The project also added a very practical feature--"Approval for me"。For those operations that can be automatically confirmed, Codex will complete it on its own; only requests that really require user decision will send approval notices via WeChat. This not only reduces frequent interruptions, but also ensures that key operations are still controlled by the user. The entire interactive experience is closer to an AI Agent in the true sense.
Not just convenience, but also safety
When it comes to WeChat connections, many people are most concerned about security issues. Codex Link is relatively restrained in design and only allowsA bound WeChat accountTo control the local Codex, the communication process is completed through Windows Named Pipe, and no additional network ports are opened; login tokens are encrypted using Windows DPAPI, and the log will not record chat content, QR code, Token or complete local path by default.
In addition, the Bridge component is only responsible for message routing, queue management, and result forwarding. It does not save the second complete chat history. The real session history is still managed by Codex itself. This design not only reduces data redundancy, but also reduces the risk of privacy leaks.
How to start using it?
Currently, Codex Link is still in the Preview stage and only supports Windows 10/11x64 and requires installation. Codex Desktop (0.144.2 and above), Node.js 22 LTS and PowerShell. After the installation is complete, you only need to execute a few commands to complete the deployment:
npm install --global codex-ilink@next
ilink setup
ilink doctor
ilink status
Then scan the code and bind it to WeChat, and you can start remotely managing your Codex project.
written in the end
With the development of AI Agents, the way future developers work is also changing. We no longer need to wait in front of the computer and wait for AI output. Instead, we can let the AI continue to perform tasks locally and check progress, supplement instructions, or complete approvals at any time through our mobile phone.Codex iLink It is a tool built around this concept that does not re-implement Codex, but makes WeChat another "screen" of Codex, enabling true cross-device collaboration.
Although it is currently only a preview version and only supports Windows, from the overall design perspective, whether it is sharing the same Thread, automatic approval mechanism, or security and privacy considerations, it all reflects a high degree of completion. If you already use Codex in your daily development, try this open source project. Maybe it will become a new tool for you to improve the efficiency of AI development.
